With its origins in ancient Greece, the art of puppetry has been practised for thousands of years, and is still immensely popular today in many cultures throughout the world. For young children, puppet shows are a magical experience, while the art of puppet-making is a popular creative activity, even for the littlest ones. Here in Perth, we're fortunate to have our very own puppet theatre, Spare Parts, which takes this ancient and expressive art-form very seriously, holding five sessions a year as well as educational workshops throughout Perth and further afield.

Every school holidays Spare Parts holds exciting workshops for children under twelve years of age. Generally two separate classes are held for different age groups. For children from four to six years old there are full-day puppet making workshops, which include regular breaks for lunch and morning tea, as well as a puppet performance, and a chance to chat to the cast and crew afterwards. Several of these are held every school holidays.

Older children aged from seven to twelve years are catered for with two day workshops, which include not only puppet-making, but also information about how to conduct a puppet performance. On day one the children create their own puppets, with the help of the skilled Spare Parts artisans, and attend one of the theatre's live puppet performances. Breaks are included for morning tea and lunch. Day two is spent learning about the art of puppet performance, followed by the chance for children to create their own production in a small group. At 3pm, parents and friends are invited to attend the children's special puppet performance, with their own hand-crafted puppets taking centre stage. It's a unique workshop and one that has been enjoyed greatly by Perth kids for years.

As well as these school holiday workshops Spare Parts Puppet Theatre also regularly holds workshops in schools and other venues throughout the state and beyond. These can be tailor-made depending on the audience, and can cover a variety of different topics such as 'Introduction to Puppets', 'Performing with Puppets' and different kinds of puppets.

In conclusion, Spare Parts is not only an iconic Western Australian performance space, but a unique arts centre where your child and you can learn more about the ancient and rich traditions of puppet making.
