These summer school holidays, the Australian National Maritime Museum is inviting youngsters up to the age of 14 into the fascinating world of Vikings.

With exciting exhibitions, crafts, games, workshops and movies in addition to fun water play, dress ups and cool vessels, the program is full of learning opportunities, fun and adventurous activities, and film and theatre experiences. So for an unforgettable school holiday experience, head to the Museum for a Viking good time.

Viking longship - Jorgen Jorgenson



Be amazed and wowed by one of the most well known discoveries in Scandinavian archaeological history, the Gokstad Viking ship. Hop aboard this recently restored reconstruction of this 9th century vessel, the Jorgen Jorgenson, and be immersed in the intriguing world of Vikings. How much do you actually know about them?

This is part of the Vikings - Beyond the legend exhibition featuring fascinating artifacts and treasures never seen before dating from 700-1100AD. You will be gobsmacked!
Date: 19 September 2013 - 2 February 2014

Meet a Viking

Meet and greet various Viking re-enactors all dressed up in authentic Viking-age clothing strolling through the Vikings - Beyond the Legend exhibition. Ask questions about Viking life, Viking culture, Viking mythologies, and arms and armour because you'll no doubt find Viking history fascinating and interesting. Don't forget your cameras as there will be plenty of photo opportunities. [BREAK]Dates: Friday 27 December 2013 - Sunday 2 February 2014

Cabinet of Curiosities: Fighting Viking

Explore wonderful and curious Viking armour and artefacts in this interactive discovery device in the galleries.

NIDA Youth Workshop: Viking Adventure TV Presenting

Hop on a ship to sail the Nordic Seas. Perhaps you may come across new found lands and gleaming treasure. Children between the ages of 9 and 11 years will be able to walk around the Viking exhibition and learn new things about the Viking world.

During this multi-day workshop, they can even become a TV presenter as they report live from the Maritime Museum. This workshop will ensure that attendees learn the tricks of the trade in TV presenting pretty quickly so don't miss out on this exclusive opportunity. [BREAK]

Kids On Deck: Viking village

Hop on board and travel back in time to the Viking village. Immerse yourself in the Viking life with raiders and traders. Heaps of activities will be on deck to satisfy and entertain the mini Vikings with workshops in learning to write your name in runes, creating your very own unique Viking jewellery, and making a cool model longship. What's more, get into the spirit of things by dressing up in Viking costume with your armour and helmet, having a go at Viking chess, and taking a tour of the fabulous longhouse cubby.

The kids will definitely be all Viking-ed up by the end of the day![BREAK]

Viking Wetworld

Grab your bathers, towels and whatever else your need for a boisterous day in the water adventure playground, WetWorld. This is not your usual playground ladies and gents.

Go into battle in the amazing Viking forts with the hottest weapons - supersoakers, or chill out and enjoy some interactive waterplay and toy boat racing. Watch out for the sea serpent Jormungand hiding behind the water mist for it may attack unprovoked.[BREAK]

Under 5s: Tour

Kids under the age of 5 won't miss out on the Viking fun because there will be tours into the world of Vikings especially designed for these little ones. Get ready for an adventurous journey filled with Vikings, pirates and terrifying monsters under the sea. There will be fabulous stories, pirate songs and kids can sing, groove and move through the galleries.
So Pack your bags for an imaginative journey into the world of Vikings, Pirates and Under-sea creatures in a series of special character tours for under 5s and their carers. Enjoy stories, sing songs and move and dance through the galleries in this fun filled learning program.[BREAK]

Family torchlight tour: Vikings after Dark

Feel like an adventure?

For the brave and the courageous, take advantage of Family Torchlight Tour guided by a special character after dark. Creep through the Vikings exhibition with the shadowy Odin and be surrounded by a wondrous Viking planet. Gasp and giggle as your hear about Viking mythology, and produce your own awesome Viking shields and jewellery. There will also be snacks (Viking themed of course) to see you through the evening. Family theatre: The truth about vikings

Giggle and laugh at this interactive circus comedy show catered towards the whole family. Hear about the captivating myths, legends and the truth about Viking life. Did Vikings really believe that the world was flat? Did they drink from human skulls?[BREAK]

Head to the theatrette and take advantage of the free family movie on the big screen. Make sure you relax and enjoy the films!

atyp theatre making: Vikings!

This is a fantastic workshop brought to you by Australian Theatre for Young People (atyp) for youngsters between the ages 9 and 12 years old. This week-long workshop delves into the world of Vikings by exploring the Vikings - Beyond the legend exhibition, which will definitely inspire you to create your own Viking stories and characters for your very own show. And don't forget to invite your family and friends to your exclusive performance.

You'll be a Viking expert by the end of the week!
