As always, Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre is hosting a large range of activities in their School Holiday Program. Workshops run daily from the 14th to 25th January 2013 and are for children aged six years and above, although on Wednesday 23rd January, there is a range of activities for pre-schoolers too.

Most of the activities on offer this summer are art and craft based with an educational component, which means that children can be creative, learn a thing or two and come away with their new masterpiece. Would your child like to bring home their own mini ecosystem (Monday 14th January), a clay echidna (Wednesday 23rd January), or a magical kaleidoscope (Thursday 24th January)?

While the sessions are worth pursuing just for the fun, I also see them as an opportunity for my children to further develop their talents and interests. For a child that is interested in theatre, consider the mini-theatre and finger puppet workshop (Tuesday 22nd January) or the marionette puppet workshop (Friday 25th January).

Most of the workshops run for 2 hours and cost $15 each, or $10 if you book three or more at the same time. However, there are a few exceptions.

On Tuesday 15th January Jay Laga'aia (you may know him from Playschool) is running 3 hour performance classes for children interested in live performance and acting. These sessions, which are $28 per child, seem like a good opportunity for kids in South Western Sydney to experience tuition from a well-respected entertainer, close to home.

The other exception is Preschoolers' Day (Wednesday 23rd January); 50 minute sessions are $5 each. These include a nature tour, mask making and animal origami sessions.

Whenever I visit Casula Powerhouse, I like to make a day of it. My kids usually do a morning session while I have a drink in the café and read a book (or work on my laptop), then we have a picnic lunch in the reserve and go for an explorative 'bush walk'—parking is close by, so it is easy to drop off the picnic basket before having an explore. The afternoon session finishes off the day so that the kids are tired out before we head home. I find that after a day at Casula Powerhouse my kids are more creative at home, for the next few days – they draw, colour, role-play and have more fun than usual (without the need for a DSi, Wii or iPod).

With so much on offer, it is best to check the Casula Powerhouse website for a full run down on activities, events and their exact times. All sessions require bookings which can be made online or by calling 9824 1121.
