Old McDonald's farm meets the 21st century
With suburban sprawl wiping out market gardens and higher prices leading to smaller backyards with no room to grow veggies, kids can be forgiven if they think that food comes from the supermarket. Sure there's the Royal Show, but wouldn't it be nice for the kids to spend some time learning about farm life, animals and gardening? Fortunately during the school holidays they can do just that without leaving town at the Perth City Farm April School Holiday Program.
Perth City Farm began in 1994 on the site of a scrap metal yard in East Perth. Though at times it wasn't an easy journey, the farm is now a respected community centre as well as a productive urban garden that operates on permaculture principles.
The farm welcomes all who respect the centre. It offers a solar powered organic café, weekly farmers markets, a plant nursery and group spaces that are often used for concerts and exhibitions or other community events.
Perth City Farm hosts school tours and workshops and supports people with disabilities through various training and recreational programs.
The farm also works in partnership with several vocational education centres to deliver Certificate II courses in Building Maintenance, Horticulture and Resources and Infrastructure.
The School Holiday Program offers children aged 6 -10 the chance to explore and learn in this unique and safe environment. As well as gardening they can enjoy acquiring skills in cooking, art and music. New this year is Ebru, the art of Turkish paper marbling, and past favourites such as circus tricks and soap making will likely make another appearance. There's also a story circle and animal visits to add to the fun. Check the Perth City Farm Facebook page for updates.
Bookings are essential as places are limited to 30 per day. The program runs from 9 to 3:30 with drop-off from 8:30 and late pick-up until 4:00. Food is included and special diets can be catered for.
