The mercury is rising and the walls are closing in. The shiny new Christmas toys are losing their sparkle already, and you're regretting the purchase of those latest video games. Peel the kids away from the screens and read on for some ideas to keep your sanity this summer in Melbourne.

1. Rubber Ducky Races: Young and old alike can join in on this "afternoon picnic" activity, inspired by this WeekendNotes article . Get to the dollar shop, number your duckies, and away you go! Don't forget your picnic.



2. Zoos and Amusement Parks: Don't forget the classics this summer, with Zoos Victoria offering free entry for kids on all public and school holidays. Don't miss Hippo Beach at Werribee Open Range Zoo. Melbourne Sea Life Aquarium , Luna Park, Adventure Park, Funfields Water Park are all going to be winners this summer.



3. Inflatable World: Yes the kids will be literally bouncing off the walls at Inflatable World ; with ten locations in Victoria to choose from, you can't miss them. Prices from $7 each and there is even an under-5s section where you can hang out with the littles while big-bro and big-sis have a go at the cliff-jump, basketball dunk, jousing, and more. We loved the Oakleigh location. Note that the equipment gets rotated between locations occasionally, so it may not be the same as pictured or even the same as a previous visit.



4. Yarra Valley Chocolatarie: Junior Chocolatier Classes are for kids aged six through twelve; a 45 minute hands-on class runs in the "parents-free zone", where kids learn to make their very own chocolate creations with the European Chocolatiers. The $30 class fee includes a chef's hat and apron to take home, name badge, graduation certificate, and three or more chocolate creations to take home. Class dates: 7th, 8th, 13th, 15th, 16th and 21st January 2015; bookings essential. Call 9730 2777 for class times and tickets.

5. Peninsula Hot Springs: The social baths of Peninsula Hot Springs can be a fun activity for the whole family, especially families with wide age gaps between the kids. Stay for oven-fired pizza for a family treat, or book one of their treatments or packages with your partner for a mini-getaway.

6. Billy Carts and Rocket Blasts: Saturday January 10, 10am to 4pm at Churchill Island at Phillip Island ; bring your billy cart and have go for the trophy.

7. Bubble Dome Holiday Program: A range of school holiday workshops are offered at the Bubble Dome , where computer learning is combined with lateral thinking problem solving activities. Topics covered include 3D animation and games design, movie making, architecture, graphics and web design and fashion, and wearable arts and photography.



8. Music Theatre Boot Camp: Your kids won't be upset at being enrolled in this Boot Camp . Singing, dancing, and performing; each child will have a role in the musical number performed for friends and family at the end of the week. Three locations and still some early bird registration options available.

9. Don't miss the LEGO event of the year: Brickvention on 17 and 18 January; tickets are selling out quickly.
