Enjoy a high tea with plenty of country charm

"There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea."
Henry James

You can have a traditional high tea inside Old Parliament House, a high tea that's all about the burgers and the beer, a cocktail-infused tipsy high tea, a Filipino style afternoon tea, or an all-you-can-eat buffet style high tea in the heritage-listed Canberra Hyatt Hotel.

But there's nothing quite like high tea in the country at the Scented Rose Garden and Teahouse.

A Country High Tea
The Scented Rose Garden and Teahouse is located in Bywong, New South Wales, about a 20-minute drive from the Canberra CBD. Formerly an empty cow paddock, it is now a delightful country cottage setting surrounded by beautiful gardens.

The Scented Rose Garden and Teahouse offers a traditional high tea service with food presented on tiered platters and brought out to you by the owner, Gabrielle, and her staff.

The high tea starts with an Australian cheese platter accompanied with a glass of sparkling wine. This is followed by savoury treats such as mini quiches, pies and sandwiches. Finally, the sweets platter arrives with a delicious assortment of sweet treats and scones. Your high tea also includes unlimited pots of tea or coffee.

It's a high tea with plenty of cosy, rustic charm, from the fresh, homemade food to the teacups, flower arrangements and table settings.

Included in the price of your high tea is entry into the Scented Rose Garden. My friends and I visited on a gorgeous spring day and so the garden was blooming with roses, irises and other spring blossoms.

We were also delighted by the many charming decorative features we came across as we strolled along the garden's pathways.

And we enjoyed visiting the quaint little potter's shed, birdhouse and hen's house with its resident fancy chicken!

High tea at the Scented Rose Garden and Teahouse is perfect for birthdays, kitchen teas, Mother's Day, and other special occasions. And it's just perfect for a girls' day out!

High tea costs $50 per person at the time of writing and is available on Thursdays-Sundays from 10am-4pm during September to March. The Scented Rose Garden and Teahouse is closed over Christmas/New Year. Bookings for high tea are essential.

The Scented Rose Garden and Teahouse is located at 1725 Bungendore Rd, Bywong. For more information or to book your high tea, please visit their website here.

"The cup of tea on arrival at a country house is a thing which, as a rule, I particularly enjoy. I like the... general atmosphere of leisured cosiness."
