Melbourne based master perfumer, Emma Leah, is passionate about fragrance. Scent Studio is the first major out-of-state presence for her company and it is gorgeous.
Invited by Westfield Chermside to instal their pop-up store, you will find Scent Studio nestled amongst the more well headed of the mall's residents. The Alice in Wonderland style space is a beautiful collection of gleaming white, mirrors, checker board, flowers and very friendly staff.
From the beautiful scent of ambergris to the pungent pineapple and the unique civet (yes, as in Eau de Cat) there is an almost overwhelming range of smells to choose from. But don't panic - for the olfactorily challenged amongst us, Emma has created a Scent Composition Wheel which groups the odours and helps take you through the scent making process. Emma assured me that this isn't the super complex, bespoke approach to scent design of the atelier perfumer - this is a simple, guided process designed to provide a custom made and custom packaged perfume on the spot.
You begin by answering a questionnaire which covers off you likes and dislikes and ensures that you will walk away with a beautiful gift for yourself or a lucky someone. The questionnaire can be completed online here.
Scent Studio operates on the basis that your tastes and preferences for food and colours, and even the season that you were born in, all come together to determine what scents you will be drawn to. This makes creating a scent to give as a gift not such a daunting prospect
For $159 you can have a 45 minute session with Emma and take home a 50ml fragrance. Fragrances come in a stylish black bottle (with or without an atomiser) and a personalised label.
