Join in the fun this October
It's time to escape the city. With three fabulous events occurring on the weekend of 20th and 21st October, the Scenic Rim is the place to be. Here's how to make the most of your weekend.
Saturday 20 October
Kalbar Country Day
The Kalbar Country Day is one fun family event not to miss. Kicking off at 7am with a free bush poetry breakfast, Kalbar's main street will transform into a buzzing hive of activity with markets, games, fashion parades, entertainment and scrumptious country fare.
Whether you are searching for plants, salt lamps, honey, windmills, fashion, arts and crafts or homemade goodies, you will be sure to find it here. The fudge and sweets sell quickly, so an early visit to the food stalls is recommended.
A day at Kalbar's Country Day would not be complete without carrot tossing and horseshoe quoits. The fun isn't just for the adults - children will be kept amused with rides, face painting and the hay scramble.
After all the fun, why not spend the afternoon relaxing in one of the Scenic Rim's boutique wineries? Excite your palate with zesty tropical fruit flavours, boiled lollies, spices, caramel and cinnamon.
Guests are invited to taste five offerings including the 2015 Chambourcin Rose, a light red wine; Verjuice a non-alcoholic juice made from Shiraz grapes with high acidity and subtle sweetness and the refreshing, sparkling version (with chilled sparkling mineral water).
Tasting cost: No charge Address: Intersection of Bunjurgen, F.M.Bell and Brent Roads, Bunjurgen, Qld 4310
Oozing ambience, the Paradine Estate Wines cellar door has been lovingly restored with timber and tin. Located in the sleepy village of Harrisville, Paradine Estate Wines offers country-style hospitality.
Six wines were available for tasting including their award-winning Cabernet, Mouvedre and Durif wines. Fruit relishes, jams, chocolates and a variety of other souvenirs are also available for purchase.
Tasting cost: No charge Address: 38 North Street, Harrisville, Qld 4307
Sunday 21 October
Kalbar Swap Meet
If you love markets and cars, then the Kalbar Swap Meet is the event for you. Hosted by the Fassifern Car Club Inc, classic cars are the hero of the day. There will cars, trucks, bikes, old engines, vintage tractors and more. The car show presentation begins at 10am.
Grand Cattleya orchids with their striking colours and freckled features, the multiple flower spikes from the Cymbidium orchids and the top-heavy Dendrobium orchids are just some of the exotic plants to be elegantly displayed on the show tables.
A delicious morning tea is available and there's also a raffle with great prizes to be won.
If you've built up a hearty appetite, look no further than the Dugandan Hotel for lunch.
"The Dugie" is the quintessential country pub and offers an extensive menu with delicious food ranging from pub fare to country favourites. Enjoy amazing views of the Scenic Rim from the deck and beer garden. The steak sandwich is delicious.
Camping is available at the Kalbar showgrounds. For an overnight stay, powered sites cost $20.00 per couple/per van and unpowered sites are $15.00 per site/per couple. Extra campers cost $5.00 per night/per person. A caretaker is on site 24 hours a day and facilities include toilets and hot showers. Dogs are allowed on leads and the showground is a short walk to shops and a hotel.
This is the perfect opportunity to get into the country spirit this October.
