Located in Norton Summit, The Scenic Hotel is to me, one of the best pubs around. The atmosphere is friendly, the staff do a great job and it has some of the best views that I have come across.

The pub is very popular on the weekends, especially during the warmer months when people can visit during the day and take in the beautiful views across the city and beyond. While it is particularly popular with the ever present cyclists in the hills, the crowd there is generally well mixed with many people coming just to enjoy some great food in a beautiful setting.

We have been there for a meal twice, the first time we went was during the week and quite early so it was very quiet and the staff were very attentive. The lady that served us did a great job of being attentive without interrupting too often or making us feel uncomfortable. The next time we were there it was much busier but the staff were still friendly and efficient with the food and drinks coming out quickly. Both times I really enjoyed the atmosphere which up in the restaurant is cosy and most importantly in winter, it is warm.

On our first visit there, I had the autumn salad with sauteed chicken, bacon, mushrooms and a honey mustard dressing as a main which was delicious and sweet but with a good amount of bacon which balanced out the sweetness. The second time I had the prawn stuffed chicken breast on cocktail potatoes with a garlic butter jus, which I was also very happy with. The chicken was a bit on the dry side but the garlic butter jus balanced that out.

My husband had the local King George whiting with Coopers beer batter, chips and a house made tartar sauce. While he couldn't fault the meal, he felt that it was a bit on the expensive side for fish and chips. He enjoyed every mouthful though which to me is better than not paying as much and not liking it so much. The second time we went, he had grilled sirloin with rosti and rosemary capsicum butter. The steak was cooked perfectly to medium rare as he had ordered and this time, he had no complaints. He particularly liked the rosemary capsicum butter which added a great flavour to a perfectly cooked tender steak.

We had dessert on our second visit which we shared and it was a very generous portion of sticky date pudding, which we both loved too.

The Scenic is known for its wine list which being pregnant I am sadly unable to enjoy at the moment but, they do have an extensive assortment of local wines with wines coming from as close as Norton Summit, Ashton, Lobethal, Balhannah and Basket Range.

Both the menu and the wine list are updated seasonally and the above selections are from the Autumn list.

The Scenic is the sort of pub where you can meet friends for a beautiful meal be it breakfast lunch or dinner, have a quiet drink at the bar or catch up with a group for a few drinks. Its location (only about 15kms from the city) and views, particularly from the upstairs balcony are undeniably one of its best features but, the service is great and so is the food so to me, it has the whole package.

The only thing that I have noticed that can be a bit of a pain about the hotel is the parking. As it is in the hills and on a corner, it can be a bit awkward. There is some out the front of the pub as you drive up Old Norton Summit Rd and also some just around the corner, opposite the beer/coffee garden. If they are full, you can turn right at the pub onto Adelaide-Lobethal Road and then right again almost straight away and park in the parking for the community centre.
