There's no doubt that a cold and dark winter's night is the perfect time to cosy up under a blanket and watch some of the latest scary movies. If you're brave enough, have a go at watching these. My top five modern day horrors are guaranteed to have you listening out for strange sounds, checking on the family and making sure that all the doors are locked before you head off to bed.

Sinister (2012)

Author Ellison Oswalt (Ethan Hawke) moves his family of four into a house where the previous family was brutally murdered. During the move he finds a boxful of old movie reels and a projector which leads Oswalt on the chase of what seems to be a random serial killer. Disturbing scenes abound from start to finish and this movie is definitely not for the faint hearted.

The Haunting in Conneticut (2009)

The Campbells have a seriously ill child and have to move to a house located closer to the hospital for their son's regular treatments. The house's macabre history starts to emerge through their son's hallucinations which are both a side effect of his medication and from the strange things they find as they explore the house and its contents further.

The Strangers (2008)

Starring Liv Tyler, this movie is about a couple who spend the night in an isolated holiday home after attending a friend's wedding reception. Not long after, they begin receiving some unwanted attention by the visitors to their house. A terrifying sequence of events ensues. Will they survive the night?

The Woman in Black (2012)

Set in Edwardian times, Daniel Radcliffe plays a lawyer who is sent out to a village to settle a deceased estate. He is taken out to Eel Marsh House to sort out the necessary paperwork but finds himself having to deals with creepy footsteps and rocking chairs which seem to have a mind of their own.

The Messengers (2007)

This spooky movie takes place on a sunflower farm in the American countryside. When a new family moves in, the supernatural entities which reside there start making themselves known to them. Kristen Stewart who plays the daughter, tries to convince her parents that there is more to the house than her parents think.

These movies are very frightening, but have a go at watching them if you are up for a scare. Most of these have a supernatural twist, which will keep the scares coming long after the movie is over.
