No, the great city of Adelaide is not in danger, but a project to save the "City of Adelaide" Clipper would appreciate financial support for its restoration.

The hull of this famous Clipper sits on a barge in Port Adelaide as a bunch of enthusiastic volunteers work to restore it. The history of this Clipper/boat is well documented as it carried passengers to Adelaide in the 1800's and is the oldest surviving sailing ship of its kind. It is estimated that 250,000 Australians have some connection with the Clipper. Visit the website to see what the Clipper looked like in the 1800's.

"Purpose built in Sunderland, UK in 1864, to carry passengers and cargo to and from the city of Adelaide, South Australia, and named after the city. The City of Adelaide undertook 23 return voyages between London and Adelaide. The only surviving sailing ship to have given regular service between the United Kingdom and South Australia, and only one of two surviving composite clipper ships in the world—the other is the famous, younger, Cutty Sark." from the City of Adelaide website.

The hull of the "City of Adelaide" was found in a shipyard in Glasgow, Scotland around 2012, and was brought back to Australia in 2014, and now waits at Port Adelaide while volunteers work on the restoration.

There are tours on a daily basis from 9 am to 3 pm (weather permitting), Cost is $20 pp or $30 for a family. The tours run at 10 am, 12 noon and 2 pm. Read further instructions re tours here .

What an amazing project – and something that folk of all ages can visit and learn the history of Adelaide and sailing in the early days of European settlement in Australia.

Volunteers have started working on the huge restoration project, which is funded by donations, funds from tours and sale of merchandise. Donations are most welcome. Click here to make a donation or to find out how you can assist with the project.
