Perth's biggest used book sale is back
The year was 1964. The Beatles were touring, Menzies was Prime Minister and a new event was taking place at the University of Western Australia. Hundreds of thousands of books and millions of dollars later, the Save the Children Book Sale celebrates its 50th Anniversary from 15 - 20 August.
Every year dozens of volunteers sort, price and transport more than 100,000 books of all types to the undercroft of Winthrop Hall. The sale opens to the public at 5:00 pm on Friday 15 August and continues for the next five days, with proceeds going to support the work of Save the Children Australia.
The queue of eager buyers forms about noon on opening day. Friday evening and the weekend days are always crowded as people browse more than 40 categories of books plus CDs and DVDs. The hardworking volunteers are kept busy restocking and acting as cashiers. On Tuesday the books drop to half price and the last day is Bargain Box Day when buyers can fill a box for a set price.
Whatever your reading pleasure, you're sure to find something here.
