With weeks and weeks ahead of school holidays many parents may be concerned about how to keep their kids, tweens & teens occupied on a budget. Here are several of our money saving tips to keep the little ones engaged and entertained without emptying your wallet all in one go.

1) Register for movie rewards through your phone provider

If you have a mobile, chances are you're with either Optus or Telstra. Both networks are worth their weight in gold come holiday season as both providers have partnered with Australia's largest movie chains to bring you discounted movie tickets. Optus is currently affiliated with Dendy, Hoyts & Govinda's cinemas, whilst Telstra is aligned with Greater Union & Event Cinemas. Why pay $18 for your adult ticket to go with the kids when you can pay only $10! Sign up for the reward program and enjoy cut price tickets valid any day, any session except after 5pm on a Saturday. Do double duty and head to the local supermarket instead of the in-house candy bar and you will save at least 50% on snacks.

2) Check your health insurance

If you have little ones it is worth checking into the benefits associated with different health insurance providers. Many offer rebates on swimming lessons with registered providers; what better way to get them active and healthy over the holidays? The warm weather will lure them outside, make sure they do it safely having learned to swim first. Don't pay full price when you could claim some back, check your policy. Bupa is one provider that offers rebate as part of their living well program, this also extends to the adults for items such as gym and yoga memberships so get clicking. It pays to do your research.

3) City of Sydney Youth Services Program

If your child is between 12 and 18 & you just don't know how to keep them occupied the City of Sydney (along with many other councils & local libraries) holds various activity days from January 6th right through to January 24th. Participation fees range from free days (byo lunch) up to $35 for a day trip to Wet and Wild. Each day does have set numbers and requires pre-registration so get moving quickly to ensure your child doesn't miss out. Activities include movie days, pool days, beach BBQs, ghost tours, bowling and more with several pick-up and drop off locations to assist with parents in transit. Check their program here .

4) Daily Deals Websites

If you've ever received the Scoopon , Groupon or Cudo emails you're probably already aware of the fantastic daily deals that can arrive to your inbox with unlimited activity possibilities. Multiple fitness activities are regular items on these emails with activities such as bootcamp, yoga, stand-up paddle boarding and kayaking. Think outside the box, and ask your kids if they'd like to give a new activity a go These classes are on special to try and gain clientele because they're quiet, and when quieter than midweek, during the day when most people are usually at work. Check the fine print for any age restrictions. You never know, you may just have the next Olympic kayaker just waiting to blossom in the water and you'll be giving them the opportunity at a fraction of the usual cost.
