This restaurant came with an excellent recommendation from my son who has travelled a fair distance regularly to eat at Sauced, Camberwell. I am a pasta lover who has the neglected this passion for far too long, so my anticipation was high.

Sauced have a unique menu and a novelty style of meal where you can customise your own meal. It's a choose your own adventure style where you first select your favourite pasta, then the sauce and any extras - so this is not a café for the indecisive. I was surprised at the possible combinations. I am eyeing off the spicy lentil Bolognese for next time.

It's easy to get carried away with all the tempting options, so please be aware that each addition attracts an extra fee. It's not the cheapest Italian meal I have ever ordered. Our lunch for three people, including one drink each was $80.

I picked the veggie strips because I thought they were veggie flavoured pasta, however they were as advertised - Julianne strips of carrots, snow peas and capsicum. The 4 pasta sauce I wanted was unavailable (Pumpkin, Pine nuts, Persian fetta and Basil Pesto) so I selected the creamy basil pesto, which had a great texture and was very tasty. I think it would have been even better on pasta or gnocchi.

My son and his friend both chose homemade pan-fried gnocchi. It looked great and they really enjoyed it. The gnocchi was very soft and tasty with the Napolitano and Bolognese sauce. Sauced use fresh produce and produce rich flavours. Warning: they are not suitable for white attire.

All meals were served with ciabatta bread and you can get more if you ask for it. Sauced add very generous amounts of parmesan. Given that there were three different selections on our table, these meals were served remarkably fast. They use fresh egg pasta that's quick to cook and it is pan-fried to order.

I will preface the following recommendation with the fact that I rarely eat hot chips because I don't like blowing that many calories on food items that are not hot or crisp enough. But by far my favourite pick of the day was the parmesan cheese chips. They must have the temperature and oil just right to be so crispy on the outside and perfectly evenly browned and soft on the inside. The chips were covered with masses of freshly grated parmesan cheese.

They cater for vegetarians, vegans and gluten-free diets.

Sauced is a small, trendy cafe with on street with outdoor dining and blue fluro lights inside. It's set up for many small groups. This has the novelty value and very good food served fast. It's definitely worth a go. As an added bonus, if you go on Sunday you have time to shop at the Camberwell market first!

Sauced also have a restaurant at 148 Chapel St, Windsor.
