Sassellas is located on the third level of the Carillion City arcade. Retail level 3 is host to the level 3 eatery (with free wi-fi); past the cafeteria-style tables and chairs and open fronted food stalls is a bar and bistro.
Honestly, it's an odd mix of bar and bistro, with conflicting ideas of service. The way it goes is, you wait to be seated, and are then nodded toward an area you can choose from, a waitperson takes your drink order and tells you to order food at the kitchen. You pay when you order food but when you receive your drinks. Your drink is brought to you but you go up to receive your food. There are no order numbers, or table numbers. I felt as though the bar was a completely separate business to the kitchen; two places sharing the same space.
After you have placed your food order with the kitchen you have approximately ten minutes for your meal to be made. When it's completed the order is called out, and if you ordered that, ten minutes ago, it's probably yours. This is much easier outside of peak hours. A waitperson takes your drink order and brings it out to you. If you wish to pay for your drinks by EFTPOS a portable machine is brought to you.
Yes the system is flawed, but I loved that I only had to wait ten minutes, that the bar and entire interior were clean and the wait staff attentive, polite and surefooted between tables.
My lasagne was delicious, the cheese stringing like perfect pizza, the sauce was hearty and the portion was more than adequate. I felt as though I got more than I paid for and that was terrific. My salad was fresh and had an appropriate amount of actual salad in it, rather than just a pile of lettuce on the plate. I opted for a cosmopolitan and was disappointed in colour but not in taste. While lacking in the traditional cranberry juice that gives the rich red, it wasn't watered down as I feared. Lovely.
Next time I'm in the city I'm sure to give it another go. It's sort of like a super clean pub, or a super relaxed restaurant and it's absolutely fascinating. Good food and good service, if a little confusing in layout. Definitely worth a visit, to see if it's to your liking; I'm still in two minds.
