Nestled in beside the railway line at Millswood, SASMEE Park is an inexpensive, fun day out for the family.
The South Australian Society of Model and Experimental Engineers runs the park where they can show the fruits of their labours. Scale model trains - including some genuine steam engines - traverse two track lines around a well set up and designed park.
There are picnic facilities, as well as a large lake in the middle, where remote controlled boats belonging to SASMEE members cruise. There is also a canteen with very well priced basics (nothing fancy). The entrance price is also very good, and for two and a half hours, plus food, it cost our family of four less than $25.
But the reason to go is to ride behind the model trains. These models pull open carriages on looped paths, through tunnels, under walkways and over bridges. The drivers are proud of their machines, and rightfully so, and the amount of respect shown them by everyone was really good to see.
They are open on the first Sunday and third Saturday of every month (weather permitting), and for further details, check out their website.
