If you're ever in the Mackay region, I'd recommend visiting Sarina Sugar Shed. This award-winning attraction beautifully showcases Queensland's sugar cane farming heritage. Fully guided tours are offered every day except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and Good Friday. There are four different tour times to choose from and you can make bookings online via their website . Doing so is strongly recommended during peak periods.

Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by one of the team members. We checked in and waited in the cafe for our tour to start. After a short welcome and introduction, we made our way to the outdoor area where there was a sugar cane patch as well as various historic machinery. I learned a great deal about the pioneering days of the sugar cane farmers.



We were then led into their working miniature replica sugar mill and distillery. The guide explained the extraction process in a very interesting way and I really enjoyed it. Have you tried fresh sugar cane juice before? Well, this is your chance. You'll also get to taste other 'stages' of the process.

Our hour-long tour finished with more tastings. This time, it's of the range of products on offer - chutneys, relishes, sauces, etc. We were given a freshly spun fairy floss each too. You'll have the opportunity to browse around the shop and purchase any of the products you've particularly liked.
