Ever wanted to do something to help charity or support a worthy cause? Are you a bike enthusiast or able to ride a minimum 10 kilometres? Then maybe this is your chance to shine and feel a great sense of achievement in more than one way.

The Santos Great Bike Ride for Charity is being held on Sunday, 25th November, 2012 at the Swan River course. Open to all entrants, it is said to cater for all ages and abilities; although I'm betting (or rather donating) that mental stamina and reasonable physical fitness would be practical for this type of race.

There are 3 types of events to choose from when applying to ride. These are:

10 kilometre (Family Ride);
53 kilometre and
106 kilometre.

Individuals, families, teams and corporations are all eligible to join in the ride. To register yourself or a team, in any of the 3 events above, just complete an Online Registration Form .

'Corporate Hospitality Packages' are available to encourage your business or workplace to become involved.

Registration fees when processed online:

10km (Family Ride):
**
Child (15 years and under) - $20** each
Adult (16 years and over) - $30 each
Family (2 adults & 3 children) - $70 total

53km ride:

Individual or Team - $75 each person

106km ride:

Individual or Team - $105 each person

Note: If you print your form and complete your registration offline, $5 will be added to each individual child, adult or team member, except for the family entry, which will add an extra $10 total.

Offline Registration Forms are available for 10km (Family Ride) , or for Team entries in 53km and 106km .

When registering online, logout at the payment screen, if you wish to pay for your entry by fundraising instead of the registration fee.

It is mentioned the registration fee to be paid by all participants simply pays for running the event. The fee is otherwise waived if you choose to attain the fundraising goal. This fundraising is therefore essential to financially aid the charities raised for and will do more than just 'cover costs.'

Bear this in mind when joining in for either fun or competition. Other than for everyone's enjoyment, health, sportsmanship, community spirit and so on, the event was deliberately created to raise money for the charities involved.

If you choose to gain free entry, it is given to participants who reach their required minimum fundraising target of $250 per person. Anything more is a bonus. Find details here .

Want to make the job of raising the mandatory amount easier?

Setup an online " Everyday Hero Fundraising Page ." This will help people to easily donate to your cause of riding for charity, whether it's family, friends, work colleagues, neighbours or local community getting behind you or your team.

What does your money and the event support?

Your money goes to designated Western Australian charities.

The Santos Great Bike Ride event, held by the Rotary Club of Perth , has run for 8 years in a row. Hailed by the website as instantly becoming, "… one of Perth's most popular community participation cycling events," since its inception in 2004.

You would be helping the following 3 charities support other people in need:

Horizon House - St John of God;
Hope for Children and
Heart Foundation .

Want to know more about the charities listed above? Select the link to each name to see. Donations are accepted at any time and all amounts big or small provide assistance.

What preparation do you need to do for such an event?

After you have completed your registration, you must receive a 'participant pack,' posted to you or collected before the day. For more information on participant packs, see Collecting Your Kit .

To receive your kit by mail, you must register before 5pm Friday, 26th October, 2012 otherwise yours will need to be picked up from the Santos Great Bike Ride Event Shop.

Achieving the best out of your ride means being organised and having a safety conscious attitude. Advice and tips to better prepare can be found here and for safety related information here .

Being prepared with a safe, positive attitude not only benefits yourself or your team but every single rider in the event. The website is packed with loads of details, too numerous to mention here.

You can also purchase or design your own clothes for the ride, although the deadline for customised orders appears to be closed.

More fun stuff:

Prizes & Entertainment will be another reward on offer for the day. A road bike worth $2,000, plus other prizes can be won. When you have completed your ride, entertainment awaits to help you relax while you sip on a cold drink. Face painting can be done for the kids too.

You can also view times from last year's event if you participated and wish to better this record.

Download the course map to familiarise yourself. Each event starts and ends in the City of Perth.

On the lighter side, the scenery around Swan River will be spectacular, the atmosphere from a large group of cyclists energising and the fresh air and open space therapeutic.
