The Swan River waterfront really is the jewel in the Perth crown. There are so many attractions located along the way, including restaurants, pubs, cafes, pristine walking and bike trails - even our award-winning Optus Stadium is located on the banks of the Swan!

Sandy Beach Playground has added another layer of greatness to our beloved Swan River. There aren't a lot of big riverfront playgrounds, which is understandable given the risk of young children falling into the water, but this one is a fantastic destination for a play or party.

When we visited there were multiple birthday parties or celebrations in full swing and it's easy to see why. The play space includes the brand new playground to keep the kids entertained, plenty of shade to keep everyone cool and the one thing that can make or break a park for families - public toilets. But plenty of them.

Yes, there are not one but multiple toilets, plus a drinking water fountain and parking across the road. That's the boring but handy information out of the way, so let's move on to the fun stuff.

At the heart of the playground is the multi-storey play structure. It features two stacked wooden cubbies connected by an ascending bridge. At the lower end is a slide for younger children and up the top of the higher end is a bigger slide, which is perfect for older kids.

A highlight for my children and pretty much all of the other kids in attendance is the water pump. There is something fascinating about the water being pumped out of one end and trickling down through the structure. They are guaranteed to get wet so take a change of clothes.

Another popular feature is the flying fox, which has two swings, making it perfect for a race between siblings or friends, or you can whiz down alone. Next to this is a set of swings and a nest swing, plus a cute little beehive themed climbing frame.

My kids love a good outdoor play kitchen, so they were right at home at Sandy Beach Playground. Plenty of sand, mud and twig pies to be made!

Like so many modern Perth playgrounds, this one has a large focus on nature play. These areas feature stone slides, timber log steps, ropes and plenty of space to get dirty.

There are several picnic tables and seats, making this a great space for a party or a morning or afternoon at the park. While there isn't a food outlet onsite, Sandy Beach Reserve is close to Guildford Road, so be sure to grab a coffee and snacks along the way, or bring your own.

Dogs are welcome, but must be kept on a lead in the playground. You are welcome to let them off the lead in the rest of the reserve, away from the playground.

Overall Sandy Beach Playground is a highly enjoyable new addition to the Swan River and a great little spot for a play, picnic or party. You will find it at Sandy Beach Reserve, along West Road in Bassendean.
