Take advantage of the Brisbane summer this year, grab a ball and some friends, flick off those shoes and feel the sand between your toes. Getting a team together and playing beach volleyball is some of the most fun you can have while being active and social at the same time.

Social competitions at Sandstorm are held on the Griffith Nathan campus, Mt Gravatt on all weekday nights except Fridays and run most of the year round. The new summer season for 2011 starts on 4th October and goes for 19 weeks, with a 3 week break over the Christmas period.

Beach volleyball in Australia has taken off in popularity and only continues to grow when people find out how addictive it is. The game was started by some bored surfers in Hawaii when the ocean wasn't providing them with any fruitful entertainment. The simple aim is to get as many points as you can by having the ball land in the opposition's side of the court over the net. Each team has a maximum 3 hits between the players to get it over the net – these include digs, sets and spikes. You will learn more rules and the differences in shots as you get out there on the sand and give it a go.

Don't let it stop you if you have never played before, or worried about your coordination skills when it comes to ball games, Sandstorm caters for all level of skill and fitness from absolute beginners to the serious competitor. The teams you can join include men's pairs and fours, mixed pairs and fours, mixed threes and women's pairs and fours. If you are just starting out, the best way to get into it is to join a team of four – mixed, womens or mens – whatever your preference, as the more people on the court, the easier it is.

The competition is also graded so you won't be playing against teams' way below or above your level. And after you have played a few games, it won't take too long to get into the swing of it with the friendly refs there to offer guidance.

If you are serious about honing your skills or want to learn the basic techniques, Sandstorm also offer Thursday night coaching sessions for all ability levels ($10 per session).

The summer season is hugely popular for obvious reasons, but after playing a while you may just find it addictive enough to brave the toe-numbing sand in the colder months.
For other locations you can play around Brisbane with Sandstorm, check out the website for more details and how you can join.

This summer season, they are offering new registered players and friends (already registered) who refer new players a free Wilson volleyball each so you can go home and practice whenever and however. So what are you waiting for, the new season starts soon!
