I had never been to the Sandringham Yacht Club before. This was the first time I had the pleasure of going there to look at racing yachts and other various water craft.

I was surprised at the size of the club and the amount of boats, not to mention the clubhouse, which I have since found out was built at a cost of $12.75 million dollars.

At that sort of cost you would want it to be impressive, but I think the majority of members here are very wealthy going off the cars in the car park alone. There is a lot of money on dry land, but not nearly as much as on the water, the boats are amazing.

I am not sure I will be a member any time soon, not just because of the membership prices but I get sea sick just standing on the floating platform without even stepping foot onto a boat. If you're unlike me and like being on the water, you can become a member from $495 annually for a single and up to $1,784 for a family. Or if you would just like to give sailing a try, there are discover sailing days that start from $90 or keel boat start sailing for $420.

If the kids want to give sailing a go they have a great little tackers program for 5 - 12 years of age. It includes 17 hours of participation during school holidays for $290.

You don't need to be a member to try out sailing.

If you prefer to take in the scenery at a leisurely pace, you can enjoy a meal overlooking the water in the clubhouse restaurant. The Sailor's lunch special lets you choose between a two course meal for $35 or 3 course for $45 from a set menu with a glass of wine. Open for lunch Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday from 12 pm. Have a look at their website for other dining options.

We were lucky enough to be able to access the platform the racing yachts were moored to and be invited aboard the famous yacht 'Shogun' , where the team had finished a training session and were getting the boat ready for racing the following day.

It was a fantastic experience to walk amongst the racing teams and get up close to all the yachts.

Although few people may be lucky enough to know one of the crew members to get on board one of these yachts, you can still get a great view of them when they are racing and just being there is good. You don't need millions to enjoy Sandringham Yacht Club.
