A Sunny Beach in Sandringham
Sandringham Beach is an outstanding stretch of sand and spray in the heart of Melbourne's South East suburbs.
In what is a fun point of history, Sandringham was for much of early Melbourne's history a holiday spot for those folks who would live further up the coast in the then 'suburbs' (as opposed to inner-city suburbs) of Melbourne such as St Kilda. While time and tide has seen Sandringham and much of Melbourne utterly transformed; the beach today still retains something of a holiday feel - sitting at the end of the Sandringham line, and with the long expanse of Beach Rd, Ricketts Point, Half Moon Bay and Co. all awaiting beyond.
Yet, before a visit to those other beaches Sandringham is indeed an excellent first port of call. Not unlike other famed seaside suburbs of Australia - such as Manly in Sydney - Sandringham is in effect two beaches in one. On the South side, there is the more enclosed and calmer section of sand, that is ideal for those just wishing to sit in the sun; and especially for those kids who crave some splashing in the shallow water.
Yet, for those that would be keen on a bigger expanse of coast, there is the northern section of the beach. Stretching for around 2.5kms, this side best suits those who have come equipped with a kickboard or a soccer ball to while away the afternoon with some friends.
Alongside the beach itself, Sandringham also features a beautiful rotunda, a bay trail for running and a section of shops (sitting between the beach and the train station) all providing a variety of options and amenities for those that wish to make a day of it at this 'holiday' beach.
In sum, Sandringham offers in effect two beaches with a wide variety of terrain, turf and fun in its surrounds to explore. It is an ideal spot to visit for a quick swim or indeed to make a day of it on a weekend when the sun is shining in the Melbourne sky above.
