Catch a huge wave, surf the skies, all without a shark in sight and no danger to the kids.

Take a trip to little Sahara near Vivonne Bay, Kangaroo Island.

Open at all times - come as you like.

Best time is on a fine day to 'surf' the waves

Arriving off the track, at first glance it seems like a fairly innocuous area, however, as you round the bend the expanse of beautiful white sand dunes opens up to you, surrounded by gentle bush.

In front of you is a massive white sand dune, hence you set off to ascend it, reaching the top, you are met with - yet another - much higher dune which, when ascended, reveals - even more sand dunes.

The views are pretty special from the top and you can see right around to the coastline.

Climbing up, your feet slip and slide in the sand and by the time you reach the top you've had a bit of a workout.

You can rent a sandboard (toboggan) and climb to the top then zoom down riding to the bottom.

People leap from the top and see how far down they can jump. Even if you crash - it's into soft sand.

Its all free (except for board hire), yet they ask "please respect this environment and leave only footprints behind".

The sandboards are pretty expensive to hire though, so be prepared. If you are planning on visiting here, you may like to bring your own boards with you (cardboard boards don't work very well at all).

On a hot day, take some water with you and you may like to get there early to avoid crowds and the heat.

Sandboards and toboggans may be hired from:
Kangaroo Island Outdoor Action located at Vivonne Bay (08 8559 4296)
or Vivonne Bay General Store (08 8559 4285).
