Going to the beach on a day like today (Friday 22 Aug 2013) was a no-brainer. After a lovely lunch in Prahran it was time to hit the Sandbar Beach Cafe at 175b Beaconsfield road in Middle Park for a large latte and cakes for afternoon tea. Great decision! What beautiful weather and what a luxury to be on the beach. Blessed!

I searched madly on Google to find out about the history of the building after I was told by the owners that it was over 80 years old, but could not come up with a thing. I'd catch a snippet of 'built in 1928' but when I clicked on the link, that sentence would disappear, so if anyone can shed some light on the history of the building, let me know. I'm curious. It apparently used to operate as a beach kiosk and brothers Rob and Joe bought the venue in 2007. Since then it has undergone a $700,000 renovation and was reopened in November 2010 by its new owners Nick and John.
Owners Nick and John thrive on efficiency and fast service and they're not half bad as a comedy act either.
Last summer I spent a few Saturday mornings at the Sandbar Beach Cafe for brunch so it was nice to revisit it on this beautiful day. Everyone obviously comes here for the view and to enjoy the beach, but the service and food ain't half bad either. Every time I've been here the service has been efficient and the food spot on! The only drawback for some perhaps will be the fact that you have to order at the counter and pay for it before the food is brought to the table. You do it again if you decide you want something else. That's fair enough, after all they are on the beach and anyone could just walk out the door onto the beach without paying and you would not find them on a busy day at the beach.

The venue itself is beautiful and welcoming and I could always imagine a wedding there. In fact, if you check out their Facebook Page you will find pictures of a wedding function and a wedding cake with a beautiful beach theme of shells on it. Gorgeous! On a warm sunny summer's day when you're with a group of good friends, it's very difficult to be fair to other customers and leave the cafe once one is done eating. Being right on the beach with food and drinks at your finger tips, one could just lounge around there and be quite at home in good company all day. Can you just imagine it. A brunch at the cafe, a quick dip at the beach, back in for afternoon tea, back on the beach and back in for another quick bite before they close. Sounds heavenly, so go ahead and spoil yourself, because you're worth it.
On the menu there's the usual fanfare of beverages; coffees for between 3 and 4 dollars and soft drinks and fruit juices for around 4.5 dollars. There is also a 10% surcharge on public holidays. The wine list is quite extensive with a variety of white, red and sparking wines, sangria, beers and cider you can buy by the glass or by the bottle. Kids meals are $12 with choices of burger and chips, fish and chips, calamari and chips or spaghetti with meatballs. Starters, light meals, salads and mains range from an average of $18 to mid $20s with choices of garlic prawns, vegetarian stack, beef, chicken and calamari salads, and a variety of risottos and spaghetti to name but a few.

Speaking of spoiling yourself, don't forget Father's day is coming up on Sunday 7th September and the Sandbar cafe is taking bookings for that special occasion if you're celebrating it. There will be 4 sittings from 8am to 10am, 10am to 12 noon, 12 noon to 2pm and 2pm to 5pm. Call them to make a booking on (03) 9696 6334. Dear old dad can have a treat on the beach side deck and enjoy the views of Port Phillip Bay over a yummy meal and drinks with family and friends.
The owners are hands-on making sure everything goes well for the customer.

I later went for a walk on the beach up to the Kerferd road pier and back as I gathered an Aldi bagful of shells to throw in my garden. I gather a few each time I go and just throw it amongst the mulch of my garden bed because I think it's pretty and reminds me of being on the beach.
