Do you remember building sandcastles on the beach as a child? Are you introducing your family to the joys of a simple bucket castle, or the fancy version with moat, turrets and everything but the kitchen sink?

Visit Sand Sculpting Australia - Under the Sea in November, and you won't think about sandcastles the same way again. You won't believe the things that can be created from sand if you haven't seen professional sand sculpting before. I've seen Sand Sculpture exhibitions in Victoria and loved them.

The exhibition runs from 23 November to 1 December 2013, on the foreshore at Christies Beach. Entry is free, with the invitation to make a gold coin donation to the Bedford Group , helping change lives for people living with disability or disadvantage.

Sand sculpting is an ancient pursuit that was rejuvenated in (where else?) California in the 1970s. Exhibitions and competitions have been held in the eastern states of Australia since 2000, with sculptors flying in from around the country and overseas. This is the inaugural event in South Australia, with potential to become a 'don't miss' event for years to come. Imagine the thrill of bringing grandchildren along many years from now, and being able to say, 'I attended the very first one'.

There will be plenty happening to keep visitors of all ages amused, particularly on the weekends. Eight sculptors, including the current World Sand Sculpting Champion, will be creating sand masterpieces to reflect the 'Under the Sea' theme in the first three days of the event. From 25 November, visitors can view the completed works, plus see artists at work on two other super-sized works. There are daily speed carving demonstrations scheduled, plus sand sculpting workshops you can join in.

Every day from Saturday 23 November to Sunday 1 December there are special children's activities for a small fee starting from 10 am each morning. Whether it is filling bottles with coloured sands to create a design, making sand art or the mysteriously named 'sand pens', it will only cost you $5 to $10 per child. Follow this link for more information about children's activities.

Be aware that there are two other big events happening in Christies Beach while the exhibition is on. The local Christmas Pageant is on Sunday 24 November from 10 am to 1 pm, so Beach Road and some surrounding streets will be closed. On Saturday 30 November, the Beachside Food and Wine Festival takes over the foreshore from 11 am to 10 pm. Your choice whether to double your fun or to pick a quieter day to visit the sand sculpture exhibition.
