Riding the waves on the highest sand dunes
Looking for a new adventure to leave your adrenalin pumping at an all time high?
Transport yourself on a quad bike to the highest sand dunes in the southern hemisphere and imagine yourself in the middle of the Dubai dessert...but even better, this adventure will take you from bush to the beach in a few minutes.
Entrance sign greets you. The first sign of things to come!
We went to Port Stephens for a 4WD experience on sand dunes, having tried out a similar experience in Hawaii but up and down the mountains where the Jurassic Park movie was filmed.
The quad bikes were all lined up and we had a 2-minute briefing on how to start, brake and turn off the engine. I was glad I had tried this before otherwise I'd have asked the instructor to repeat his instructions. And I didn't want to do this, being 1 of 3 females among the 12 other male participants!
No brochure or website can do justice to the thrill of what you'll experience in the next hour. Where we went up and down the sides of the Hawaiian mountains, rolling down the extremely steep sand dunes took the cake! A guide at the front and another at the end of the bike line made sure everyone was safe.
At first, rolling down what seemed to be a 100-degree angle on a huge, heavy metal vehicle didn't look like a good idea. But it was THE BEST! Up and down we went, all through the endless kilometres of dunes.
The most intoxicating, energising part of the adventure.
