We don't get to go out much at night as parents, which is fine most of the time, but sometimes you get tired of watching MasterChef or re-runs of Family Feud and want to go out and do something, god damn it. But that means finding some place that is child friendly, not that far away, and being home in time for our toddler to go to bed. I had a brilliant idea the other night – San Churro's in Midland! It was perfect. It's not that far from us. We could go and have a slice of cake and be back in time to put our daughter to bed. Unfortunately, we went on a Friday night. It was not a good idea.

The shop was horrendously crowded. It was so bad I heard a waitress huff in annoyance more than once as she tried to make her way through the throng to bring people their food. We managed to find a little table squeezed into a corner. We decided to get a flourless chocolate cake and churros for one.

When I went up to order the noise in the restaurant was terrible. I was asked if I wanted extra strawberries and bananas with our churros but I didn't really grasp what she was asking me over the noise. I heard her say something about strawberries so I said "Yeah?" thinking she was asking me what flavour chocolate dipping sauce we wanted. I was annoyed when I saw the receipt and realized that I'd been charged an extra $6 for the bananas and strawberries.

I probably wouldn't have agreed to it if I'd known it was going to cost me extra. But in fairness the fruit actually did complement the chocolate dipping sauce and balanced the sugar and sweetness well. So I was happy with the fruit in the end, but still annoyed that it had cost me so much extra.

My flourless chocolate cake was nice and not that sweet. My daughter had several mouthfuls and was soon grinning at me with chocolate smeared all over her face and teeth so it definitely gets a thumbs up from her. I enjoyed it as well.

If we go back I doubt we will go on a Friday night again. I've driven past there at different times of the week and seen it a lot less crowded, so there are obviously less busy times that we could go. I think it would be a lot more enjoyable if the place was less crowded. It is definitely a good place to bring children. They have a lot of options that little kids will like raging from chocolate frogs to macarons to their famous churros.

I had to wrestle my daughter away from her favorite show on Netflix to take her there. but she definitely wasn't complaining when we left with her tummy full of chocolate cake. She was happy and ready for bed.
