The McLaren Vale wine region is filled with plenty of wineries, but one not to miss on your next winery tour is . The winery sits atop a hill looking out not only over the extensive vineyards, but also over the breathtaking Okaparinga National Park . Head to Samuel's Gorge for some casual wine tasting in a very picturesque location.

The Cellar Door sits inside an old barn, don't expect shiny floorboards and freshly painted walls, the rawness of this building helps build up the atmosphere. You can come along 7 days a week between 11am to 5pm, and once you grab a glass you'll not only get to try some wines, but you can also learn a thing or two about the region, and the wines, and what makes them unique.

Samuel's Gorge has a very relaxed tasting, which is great if you're there to socialise, or if you're still a bit new to the wine world. There is no need to stand stiff at the front counter, trying to make forced conversation, find a spot and watch the wine shared around like you're old friends at a party. If you do have any questions they're only more than happy to answer them. You'll see the focus is squarely on the reds, with a Shiraz, Grenache, and Tempranillo ready for you to try and buy.

While the wines are worth the trip, you should also consider adding Samuel's Gorge to your list just for the location. The natural beauty surrounding the property is great, but inside the barn the table tops made from old wine barrels, and the worn paint on the walls all exude a real charm. It's a lovely place to just sit and have a chat, and of course a sip of wine.

Head outside and you can enjoy a picnic on the grass, or why not try your hand at quoits, the popular garden game that sits outside. There are tables to sit at, which make the perfect spot when the weather is a bit warm. It is a great place to soak in some of the beauty of the McLaren Vale region .

Samuel's Gorge is a prefect example of the friendly and relaxed wineries that are the highlight of this region. Justin McNamee has a passion for what he does, and a short stop at Samuel's Gorge makes this clear.
