Learn a new way to live
The South West of Australia hosts some of the most pristine coastline in the world with clear turquoise water and fantastic waves.
Dunsborough , just 2.5 hours south of Perth, right on Geographe Bay and a short drive from beautiful Yallingup beach, is the home of Samudra (meaning Ocean), a special place that combines, Yoga, Nutrition, Surfing and Sustainable Living.
During this year's Yallingup Surfilm Festival, Samudra hosted the day time screenings of the best recent surf films from around the world. I was fortunate enough to be able to accompany my two teenage sons to this event and even after living in the Byron Bay region for years, had never experienced anything quite like Samudra.
Founder,Sheridan Hammond, was searching for an alternative way to manage his back pain, when he discovered the restoring benefits of yoga. He started to share his appreciation and love for yoga, surfing and a healthy, wholesome lifestyle by organising group tours to unique locations around the world. Before long, his retreats became immensely popular, so much so, that he decided to create a base where people could come together all year round.
That base, housed in a building that has been lovingly restored using such diverse materials as salvaged timber from Busselton jetty, now showcases two beautiful Yoga studios, an Eco store and a Vegetarian cafe.
Samudra's vision: people and planet living in optimum health, happiness and celebration of life.
Samudra's mission: to inspire and nurture humanity to reach their full potential; to be agents for positive change. Samudra's concept: to gather and share best practices, products and life skills to 'live the dream' through yoga, nutrition, surfing and sustainable living.
Samudra's promise: to behave genuinely, honestly and with respect to people and planet.
So, since opening a few years ago, Ashtanga yoga classes have been offered, teaching not only yoga poses but a foundation and direction for life. The eco store boasts 100% fair trade clothing and yoga wear made with organic cotton, lycra and bamboo with environmentally friendly dyes.
Yoga mats and a range of great books are also available.
Retreats to magnificent settings for individuals or corporate groups where participants can have the chance to learn or develop their yoga practise, deepen their awareness of the ocean, ride quality waves and eat wholesome, nourishing food, give the benefit of learning to live a mindful and healthy lifestyle.
