Who are Samson & Sophie ? No idea, but I had brunch at their place on the weekend, and felt like a princess rather than a post-yoga-class blow in. Brought to life by the teams behind respected Alcove Cafe and Deli at Wilston, Esher St Cafe and Deli at Tarragindi and the Bulimba florist and gift shop Stalks and Stems , Samson & Sophie offers a winning recipe based on fresh local food 'done well'. Fabulous coffee is its other major drawcard and, with the mercury rising in Brisbane, staff on this particular Sunday morning were doing a brisk trade in various chilled concoctions including iced coffee, chocolate, chai and mocha with icecream and a dash of vanilla. Divine.

A Teneriffe gem which launched in March 2014, but which I've sadly only just discovered, Samson & Sophie offers all-day breakfasts as well as later-in-the-day lunches. I opted for the beetroot and halloumi Greek pitta - a soft, wrap stuffed with free range eggs, grilled halloumi, lemon zucchini, greens and spicy (and, it must be said, delightfully sweet) beetroot relish. Served warm, with a smile, it was somehow nourishing on an emotional as well as a physical level. There was an extra bonus too: by the time I'd polished it off, my plate looked like a sunset - all drops of yellow yolk and bright red beetroot juice - which I managed to contemplate, zen-like, for several minutes as I finished my latte. Maybe it was the yoga earlier which put me in this frame of mind, but still ...

Other breakfast items include vanilla bean bircher muesli, roast pumpkin fritters with honey carrots and wilted spinach, lemon chorizo stack with pan fried Greek potatoes and poached eggs, and something called 'Italian eggs' (slow-cooked sausage in tomato sauce with poached egg and sourdough). Gluten friendly options include apple and coconut hot cakes served with honey ricotta, seasonal poached fruit and lemon zest. For lunch, there are salads, wraps and toasties. That's if you can tear yourself away from the breakfast menu.

Adding to the kitsch but cool atmosphere, much of Samson & Sophie's furniture is recycled and repurposed - think revarnished doors, wooden crates, mismatched chairs and 'growing' coffee tables.

There's more than mere food for sale too. A wide variety of artisanal gems including wooden bow ties, handcrafted jewellery, ceramics, sunglasses, kitchenware, leather goods and cheerful curiosities such as jars of 'happy pills' (presumably for decoration rather than consumption) are also on display for diners who wish to take some of this urban good taste back home with them.
