What does it mean to be a young person in Australia? That's the question posed and explored by the play
Samson, written by one of Queensland's brightest new playwrights Julia-Rose Lewis.
The big hearted, brutal and raw play will make its Brisbane debut at the La Boite Roundhouse Theatre from 17 April to 2 May. It stars rising talent Ashleigh Cummings (
Puberty Blues, Tomorrow When the War Began, Gallipoli) and ACPA (Aboriginal Centre for the Performing Arts) graduate Benjamin Creek under the internationally-regarded direction of Kristine Landon-Smith.
This dark and beautiful story is both funny and sad, brutal and gentle, but is at all times, searching for the truth.
La Boite Artistic Director Todd MacDonald said he was committed to bringing diverse actors to the Roundhouse stage, commenting that through its 90 years La Boite has "provided a platform for distinctive new Queensland voices".
75% of the cast from Samson are from culturally diverse backgrounds. In fact, La Boite's mission for their 2015 season is to be the most diverse season in the company's history.
Samson was developed by Julia-Rose Lewis in 2013 when she was a La Boite Artist-in-Residence.
At the heart of the tale is the startling idea that the death of someone important can be the start of something excellent. This coming of age story set in Queensland explores the characters' hopes and dreams for a future they struggle to picture.
Sources at La Boite say
Samson promises to be the hottest ticket in town to one of the edgiest and culturally significant Australian plays since
