Don't Just Make Your Day, Make Your Life
Who needs an excuse for a lovely drive out to picturesque Samford? If it's been a while since you've last visited the beautiful valley, here's your perfect excuse to go back. The Samford Commons' Maker Festival is on November 4th from 11am. It's on at the old CSIRO site that Samford Commons is working on repurposing into a community venue. I spoke with one of the organisers, Leah Hudson, who said, "While we are awaiting the refurbishment to take place, we're trying to activate the site by doing things in the spaces about the building."
So what is a maker festival anyway? Well, makers are people who like to create, but it goes beyond that because they also like to repurpose and recycle. Leah told me, "The festival is a celebration of all forms of human creativity." It encourages reusing and repurposing. The makers will show you ways in which you can be creative to avoid over-consumption. You'll leave the festival with a heap of great ideas on ways you can live, work, play and learn sustainably.
Learn Compost Making
This is an 'almost free' event in that entry will only set you back a gold coin and you get a raffle ticket with that entry. Your ticket could win you prizes generously donated by TerryWhite Chemmart Samford, Spokes, BWS, Heart & Soul Gifts & Gallery, and more. There will be workshops, stalls and entertainment for all ages at the festival. You'll find arts, food, energy, environment, community building, education, technology, sustainability, creative design and more.
The workshops and stalls will be using old skills and new innovations to demonstrate their creative ideas for sustainable living. You can learn all about tool libraries where people exchange tools rather than everyone having to buy their own. Pick up the paintbrush and try your hand at some watercolour, or how about the fine art of compost making?
Sustainable play for kids
Low waste and no waste
Glow in the dark bubble slime
There will also be interesting talks throughout the day and at 4pm the exciting billy cart races are sure to be a hit. Don't worry if you don't know how to make one, you can go along to the billy cart making workshop during the day!
Enjoy some live music as the day winds to a close and if you're keen to meet the makers, attend the business networking long table dinner that evening. It's potluck though so every individual attending will need to bring a dish of food to share.
Leah from Samford Commons is excited to be, "bringing the community together to celebrate creativity." So why not join her and the rest of the beautiful people of the Samford Community this November 4th? I might see you there!
