The Sambal Oelek Restaurant is named after the spicy sauce which is added to many Asian dishes and essentially means ground chilli. This Indonesian Restaurant goes through seven kilograms of standard red chilli a week!

Sambal Oelek is easy to find and located in the Big Gun Complex. It has a clean and modern décor. The chef uses only local and fresh ingredients from the markets. All of their chilli pastes are made fresh and many of the dishes are prepared from family recipes and authentic home-style cooking.

We started our meal with refreshing home-made lemonade in jars, but you could order coconut juice, coffee with condensed milk, or jasmine, green or black tea, as well as the usual selection of drinks.

For entre we ate our way through delicious Indonesian traditional fish cakes, creamy crab croquettes (a popular choice), vegetarian spring rolls, and chicken and fish dumplings with a peanut sauce.

For main I ordered the Hainan chicken with rice. It can be steamed or fried. The chicken thigh was mouth-watering and accompanied with soy sauce, a ginger sauce and mild chilli sambal. The rice was cooked perfectly.

My dining partner ordered the grilled snapper fillet wrapped in banana leaves. It was moist and full of spicy flavours like lemongrass, ginger and turmeric. The fish was cooked just right with a good balance of chilli. The portion sizes of both dishes were generous and good value for money.

The best-selling choices on the menu are fried ox-tail, beef rending, nasi goring and mie goreng. Nasi kuning has a good combination of a few different dishes. Sambal Oelek also offers soups, noodle dishes, rice dishes, and traditional meat based curries.

We finished the meal off with ice chendols which are commonly sold in Indonesia on the roadside by vendors. It is a sweet drink made with palm sugar, coconut milk and green worms of pandam. The other dessert options were ice cream, banana fritter or rice pudding (but we were too full!)

The restaurant is certified halal and MSG-free. There is a menu especially for children. Takeaway is also available.

Sambal Oelek is a great restaurant for locals who want to try authentic Indonesian food.
