is being held at the Karrinyup Shopping Centre for its eighth year, and from 1st December through to 24th December, the community is asked to "
experience the true joy of Christmas by giving to those in need".
The aim of this appeal will be to collect the following:
2,000 new toys and adult gifts
2,000 food items which will be given directly to Perth families doing it tough this Christmas
Over $10,000 to assist The Salvation Army's crisis centres in Perth in the lead up to Christmas
The Salvation Army volunteers will, as usual, be giving up their precious time to pick up unwrapped donated items in the Fresh Food Mall near Woolworths at Karrinyup, and in this period leading up to Christmas.
The Salvation Army Public Relations Secretary, Warren Palmer, said that this year, the organisation expected to assist as many as 300,000 people over the Christmas and New Year period and "
urgently needs community support to do so".
Mr Palmer went on to say "
It is a sad reality that many West Australians have nothing to eat, nowhere to sleep and face various other forms of hardship. For them, celebrating Christmas is impossible. This time of year, making a donation to the Santa Stocking Appeal is a small gesture, which can make a huge difference to those in need. It is also a great reminder of the true spirit of Christmas."
[b]ABOUT THE SALVATION ARMY**
The Salvation Army is one of the world's largest social welfare organisations with more than 1,650,000 members. They have been working in over 123 countries throughout the World, and have been operating in Australia for almost 130 years.
At the moment, they have more than 6,500 officers and staff delivering in excess of 600 "
specifically designed social programmes across Australia".
They are currently helping over 1 million people in Australia each year, which is a fabulous contribution to society. A typical week for this organisation right around Australia will provide the following approximate figures:
100,000 meals for the hungry
2,000 beds for the homeless
5,000 to 8,000 food vouchers
1,000 people will be helped to find employment
Refuge to 500 victims of abuse
Assistance to 500 people addicted to drugs, alcohol or gambling
Several thousand people with counselling
3,000 elderly people with aged care services
1000 people in the court system with chaplaincy services
Family tracing services which locate 40 missing family members
What a worthwhile charity. Please donate this month to help all those people who will not be as lucky as we are, to have a slightly better Christmas.
