Top restaurant serves delicious food in vibrant atmosphere
In the leafy suburb of Roseville is a wonderful restaurant serving delicious food in a homely atmosphere. Salt Pepper Nutmeg could easily be overlooked with a small shop front on the busy Pacific Highway. When entering this lovely eatery, there are tables set for large groups as well as settings for two to four diners. Salt Pepper Nutmeg doesn't possess the austere look of some fine dining establishments. This eatery is spacious and unpretentious.
On the walls were colourful wall hangings, there were remainders of Christmas decorations adorning the ceilings and playful ornaments were scattered around the restaurant. Tables were decorated with large colourful flowers and seats had lively bright cushions which gave Salt Pepper Nutmeg a light-hearted informal appeal.
So to begin, my partner and I decided at the last minute to see a movie at Roseville Cinema. The movie concluded at 6 pm and we were famished. Next door to this historic cinema was Salt Pepper Nutmeg. As we hadn't made a booking, we asked whether there was a table for two. The waitress said that the restaurant was fully booked for the night but they could accommodate us if we could leave by 7.30 pm. We were shown to a large table that could seat eight. "Wow", we thought, "this is spacious". On our table, there was a variety of lettuce in a large vase which hinted this was no ordinary fine diner. Our 90 minute exquisite food experience began.
My partner ordered from the blackboard menu, a Snapper with roasted vegetables. I ordered the eight hour lamb shoulder ragu in red wine. While we waited, another couple arrived without a reservation and were seated at the opposite side of our table, with the proviso that they also leave at 7.30 pm. This suited them as they were going to the cinema after dinner. Interestingly, another couple also arrived soon after, also without a reservation and were seated at another table.
Next were the desserts. My partner ordered the Cassata Sicilia which was delectable. He commented to the waiter that this was an unusual cassata. My partner, of Italian descent, has had his fair share of tasty cassatas but he said this particular dessert was magnifico.
I ordered the Flan Catalan, a silky smooth crème brulee topped with fruit segments and pistachio nuts. This dessert was delicious. The only downside about this dessert were the citrus segments that had a slight sour flavour.
One of the main ingredients of this restaurant was its service. The waitress was friendly and very accommodating to diners that "dropped in". The other two wait staff smiled and all of them were professional in serving their customers. My partner and I agreed that this was a top restaurant to start the new year.
Salt Pepper Nutmeg has a movie and meal deal for lunch or dinner. It's $45 per person or $38 for seniors.
