Located on 9/51-53 Synnot St, Werribee lies hidden in a strip of shops, an absolute gem of a restaurant. Salsa Mexican Restaurant lacks the glitz and glamour of a posh restaurant but what it lacks in flamboyance it makes up more than adequately in its offerings.
Service and décor
The small restaurant is dotted with wooden tables and chairs with the walls covered with Mexican pictures and costumes. Beautiful Mexican music filters through the restaurant. A friendly waitress will show you to a table and hand you a leather-bound menu that lists a wide assortment of food, drinks and desserts.
The atmosphere is welcoming with smiley waitresses assisting you with your orders and the friendly manager engaging in delightful chit-chats and enquiring about your experience. The service is prompt and do not leave any room for complaint.
Salsa Mexican restaurant hits all the right chords with their lovely selection of drinks. We were torn between the horns of dilemmas with the wide range of options available. After much heated debate and with the assistance of our friendly waitress, we finally settled for a Mango Margarita, a Tropical Margarita and a Pina Colada.
The drinks appeared within a few minutes. The chilled Mango Margarita had a sweet taste while the Tropical Margarita had a tangy flavour. Both the margaritas were delicious and earned our admiration. However, the Pina Colada with its slightly sweetened flavour and a hint of coconut juice was the ultimate winner. The perfect thirst-quencher, this drink is an absolute delight.
Food The menu boasts a huge range of exotic Mexican food and has been designed to cater to the needs of everyone, including the ones with an indecisive streak.
For entree, we ordered a small Nachos which turned out to be a massive plate of crispy corn tortilla chips smothered with melted cheese, topped with guacamole, sour cream and salsa. The chips were crunchy and felt divine with the melted cheese and the decadent combination of guacamole, sour cream and salsa. Needless to say, the plate was emptied within minutes.
The entrée raised our expectation by manifold and we hungrily eyed the kitchen door for the appearance of our mains. Within 15 minutes, our tables were loaded with generous servings of colourful and flavoursome Mexican dishes as we juggled for space for our drinks and glasses of water. Indubitably, the mains were scrumptious and fulsome. As the aromatic smell tickled my nostrils and ignited my hunger even more, I eagerly dug into my Avocado Del Mar with a fork. Seafood covered in cheese and a tasty filling had been baked in a whole avocado and served with rice and salsa. The prawns were plump while the other seafood was equally delectable. My tongue tried to differentiate between the diverse range of flavours while my tastebuds rejoiced at the succulence of the seafood and avocado.
As promised by the menu, the Chicken Quesadilla was a tortilla stuffed with a generous blend of cheese, chicken and delectable gravy and had been baked to perfection. This scrumptious dish was served with a topping of guacamole, sour cream and salsa and a side of rice. The first spoonful of this amazing dish landed me in foodie heaven and I took some more mouthfuls of this dish which was truly teeming with exotic Mexican flavours.
Unfortunately, we failed to finish both the mains. Loosening the belts and pulling down the pants towards the waist did not help much in the way of making further space for more food. After persevering some more, we made our way to the counter to pay off our bill which was surprisingly reasonable for the amount of food and drinks we had consumed.
