The second work in Sally Smart's trilogy, you'll find P.A.R.A.D.E at Geelong Gallery, 55 Little Malop St, Geelong, from Saturday 19 March to Sunday 3 July 2022. Taking inspiration from the historical avant-garde performances and designs of the early 20th century Ballets Russes, widely regarded as the most influential ballet company of the era, Smart has brought it into a contemporary world. Coinciding with Geelong Design Week, Smart has created an environment you can experience and immerse in by using textiles (costumes and curtains), sculptural components and performance (video & sound) inspired by the sets and costumes designed by Pablo Picasso for the Ballets Russes' Parade in 1917.

One of Australia's most highly regarded contemporary artists, Smart is Melbourne-based. Central to her multi-disciplinary practice is the act of cutting, splicing, pinning, layering and manipulating multiple fragments across spaces. She's had a long-standing interest in the domestic and feminine, with a desire to interrupt societal expectations of gendered roles. The main component of the exhibition is the curtain or backdrop, and it functions as a conceptual framework, with costumes seemingly freestanding in space as figures of performance in costume. These performance assemblages are inspired by choreography and point to the body's capacity to express anxiety; individually or collectively.
