When travelling with kids it helps to become familiar with all the parks, playgrounds and gardens that you can visit when they start going stir crazy in the car. It's much better for the sanity of the driver and co pilot to stop and let the kids burn off energy before resuming the trip. If you're prepared then pack a picnic or some morning/afternoon tea to break the trip up.

On a recent trip we visited the Sale Botanic Gardens, we had visited once before but we got the wrong playground as there are two. The first is behind the main street and overlooks the lake, and the second one is on the other side of the lake and is within the botanic gardens, from our observations this is the one the locals frequent, and I must say it is with good reason as to why.

The facilities are fantastic with a children's playground, tennis courts with free usage, BBQ's, a pergola with table and chairs, toilets and Aqua Energy a community swimming pool adjoining the botanic gardens. It's a great use of space in a country town for children, teenagers and adults alike.

In the gardens you will see peacocks roaming free, water birds, geese, ducks, a vegetable garden, sculptures, an arch way with wisteria working it's way up, many old trees ( the gardens are 150 years old ), fauna enclosure, sensory garden and Elm forest.

As for the adventure playground it has heaps to keep the kids amused with 2 flying foxes, 3 slides, swings, spinning ride, climbing frames along with all the usual stuff but what's really good about this playground is that it has heaps of shade provided by beautiful old trees and plenty of places to sit.

If you're feeling energetic you can take a stroll around the lake and use some of the exercise stations along the way. We noticed a few people fishing in the lake, I'm not sure if they were catching anything but the kids looked to be enjoying themselves.

A picnic on these lush lawns are a must, it's a lovely spot to sit and take in all the scenery, especially on a day as perfect as the one we had.

The next time you're heading through Sale I recommend stopping to take a look at the Sale Botanic Garden, Guthridge Lake and the adventure playground to stretch your legs and let the kids run wild. You will thank yourself later when the kids sleep for the rest of the trip.
