For a gold coin donation that goes to the Rotary, you can immerse yourself in Japanese cultural performances, traditional tea ceremony demonstrations, activities for children and facilitated nature walks among the (nope, not gum trees) Cherry Blossom Loop Walk. Sakura (cherry blossoms) viewing is celebrated at Hanami (literally means viewing flowers) festivals held all over Japan during springtime with picnics under the trees.
Sakura Picnic Day will be held on Sunday 15 October 2017 from 11am to 2pm at the Banksia Park on Templestowe Rd, Bulleen. Bring the family, bring friends and enjoy a community picnic brought to you through collaborations between the Japanese Society of Melbourne, the Australia Japan Society of Victoria, the Manningham City Council, Parks Victoria and the Rotary Club of Templestowe.
Bike racks and locks will be available on site if you're cycling, and a shuttle bus will be available at designated overflow parking sites including Birrarung Park and Yarra Flats, as parking at Banksia Park is limited. Don't forget to bring your picnic, a blanket or picnic furniture to sit on. Don't feel like bringing food?; then there's the Kimu Korean and Poke Time food trucks to choose from. Look out for updates on the Manningham Council's Facebook page.
