Even though I am a fish lover, I have never been enthusiastic about sushi. I am probably the only person in my close family that never enjoyed going to sushi bars and made life difficult for those that enjoyed it. So, when on my recent trip to New York, when my boyfriend's Auntie and Uncle suggested we visit Sakura Hana, their local sushi bar, I was not overly keen on the idea.
Floyd, the restaurant owner, was very friendly when we were introduced to him and I was anxious when we said that we would try his sushi later that evening. Upon entering the restaurant, we were greeted extremely well by one of the waiters who showed us to a table with huge enthusiasm. My boyfriend was extremely excited about trying the sushi here while I was nervous about finding anything I would be willing to try on the menu. At a first glance at the menu, I didn't know where to begin. There is a lot of choice and I was astonished at the reasonable price of all the dishes.
We were pleased when Floyd came out to ask us what our preferences were when it came to sushi. I was honest when I said I hadn't tried much that I like. Next thing we knew, we had a dish served in front of us that was on the house. A beautiful dish with noodles and white fish with a crab flavoured sauce - delicious. A lovely start to the meal and extremely thoughtful of Floyd to give us a meal on the house as we had only just met him. As we pondered over our main course I was excited to see that you could see the chefs cooking as the kitchen was at the end of the restaurant. All the chefs were very friendly and smiley to the various customers as they prepared their meal.
I decided to give myself a number of options and tried a mixed main option with California rolls and various fish slices over sushi rice. I'm not an expert on sushi, as I have said, but the fish had extremely powerful tastes but I thoroughly enjoyed them as I adore really fishy fish! The California rolls were absolutely amazing. I couldn't understand why I never liked them before (perhaps I just hadn't been to somewhere as good before). The outside of the roll had crispy, but very light, batter and the rolls were still warm. An explosion of flavours came into my mouth. Every ingredient was cooked just to perfection.
After this course, I was about to burst but the waitress twisted our arm into trying one of their speciality ice creams. As I had tried and enjoyed something I previously believed I did not like, I decided to go for a coconut flavour (a flavour I have really never got on with) as well as a green tea flavour as we were intrigued. This night was again full of surprises on what I believed I didn't like as I enjoyed the coconut flavour the best. I wasn't sure about the texture of the ice cream as the outside was quite chewy with ice cream in the inside, but it was definitely an experience.
Upon finishing our experience the owner was very grateful that we had tried his restaurant. He asked us how everything was and wanted to know that we had enjoyed everything with our meal. He was very attentive; just a genuinely nice person. It is nice to see owners that go out of their way to satisfy their customers.
Every time we looked over at Floyd throughout our meal, he would give us a big smile making us feel really welcome. There was a great atmosphere and the staff could not have been more attentive. I fully recommend this restaurant to either anyone new to sushi, like me, or those that a sushi lover and anyone in between! You can't use disliking sushi as an excuse! I hope that next time I visit New York I can try Sakura Hana again.
