If you enjoy sailing, and want to see the waters surrounding New York, there's good news - you can. And, this includes right here in New York City.
There are public marinas which you can use to dock your private sailing vessel, if you bring it with you or make arrangements to have to brought to New York City. One of these is 79th Street Boat Basin. It's easy to make reservations for your sailing vessel too. You can also rent a sailing vessel at one of the marinas in New York. You can choose from half-day or full-day rentals. Depending on the size and accommodations available, you can also rent some sailing vessels for overnight use.
If you are planning on sailing your private vessel or renting one of the many sailing vessels available, make sure you have your certification card with you. You'll most likely have to show it in order to be able to sail.
If you've never tried sailing, or it's been a while, you can use part of your New York vacation to take sailing lessons. There are several places, such as Offshore Sailing, that offer sailing instruction. Classes from ½ day refresher courses (for people who haven't sailed in a while) to three-day courses for beginning sailors.
The lessons at Offshore Sailing are fun, not boring. There is some classroom time, of course, but the instructors make sure you get a lot of time and experience on the water, in one of their easy-to-navigate sailing vessels that are just right for beginners.
The class times are divided up so that you get a lunch break and well as another break right before you go out on the water. This ensures that you're fresh and mentally alert when you actually start learning how to handle the boat.
Once you have gone through the three-day course, you're ready to take the certification test. This is offered on a very frequent basis, making it easy to get your certification and start enjoying sailing in New York!
