Saigon Pho have a restaurant on Lygon Street, across the road from Toto's Pizza House and next door to Carlton Curry House, and another restaurant in Footscray on Nicholson Street. They're open 7 days a week from 10am until 10pm and take-away is available.
Seated outside on Lygon Street, I had to compete with wind, falling leaves and seagulls. I'd push for an inside seat next time.
I ordered a small chilli beef soup called Bun Bo Hue, which came with a salad garnish (chilled bean shoots, shredded lettuce, a few mint leaves, fresh chilli and a small lemon wedge). Actually, the salad came out first and left me wondering if I'd ordered the wrong thing.
When my soup did come, it was a huge portion and the beef was melt-in-your-mouth-amazing – and I'm not a fan of meat. I didn't love the noodles – they tasted a little like over-cooked spaghetti to me, but the comparison is probably not a fair one, and they did add value and bulk to the soup. The broth flavours were delicious (mostly chilli).
Next time I'd like to try Saigon Pho's spring rolls.
Psst – Can anyone tell me what this white chunk was?
