Saga delivers the most heartbreaking chapter of Hazel's life
Saga Vol 9 Fiona Staples Brian K. Vaughn
Staples & Vaughan. Image Comics.

Saga Volume 9 was released on September 26 2018. It is the ninth paperback collection of Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staple's immensely popular comic book series Saga.

Saga is a fantasy/space opera about a husband and wife, Alana and Marko, from two different warring alien races who must avoid the authorities if they want to raise their daughter Hazel in peace. The series is narrated by Hazel, who is reflecting back on her childhood as an adult.

In Saga Volume 9, Hazel is around seven years old and her family has grown to include tabloid journalist and photographer Upsher and Doff, Petrichor, Prince Robot IV and his son Squire, and the adorable little seal-man Ghus.

The biggest thing that I like about Saga is how nothing is ever censored. Saga is violent, weird, wonderful, colourful, horrifying, arousing and everything in between. Volume 9 of Saga does not disappoint in this area. We see Petrichor, a transwoman from the same world as Marko, begin a romantic relationship with Prince Robot IV. There is a sex scene between the two of them that is pretty detailed. I thought it was a good example of how Saga continues to showcase positive depictions of sexuality, diversity and gender roles.

A lot of plot lines wrap up in Volume 9 and the comic passed an impressive milestone with the release of issue 50. I won't spoil what happens, but I will say that this book might devastate you, so much you could find yourself tempted to throw it across the room afterwards in a rage.

As for me personally, I've never been so emotionally shattered after reading a comic book. The only thing that is keeping me going is Vaughan has said the series is only halfway finished and he thinks that there are at least another 50 issues left in it. But to add salt to the wounds…they're taking a one year break!

If Vaughan and Staples need time to recharge their creative batteries I know, logically, that is a good thing but still - that's a heck of a long time without more Saga. I hope that time passes quickly because I need to know what happens to Hazel and her family!
