Sometimes it is easy to think the worst. You often hear of people using vouchers (such as Cudo and Social Living) at restaurants being treated poorly, or receiving smaller serves. Restaurants often receive only a fraction of the cost of the food, and there can be a long delay before they receive money for their service. So it was with a bit of apprehension that I took my family and in-laws to in Floreat armed with two vouchers.
I was pleasantly surprised. We arrived early on a wet Saturday complete with two small children in fairy dresses and a baby in a capsule. There was an initial confusion about the size of the table - first they offered us one too small, and then one that was too large - I was beginning to feel like Goldilocks. We were warned that the table we were eventually seated at was booked again in ninety minutes and we would need to be gone, but since we were dining with three little girls, a leisurely dinner lasting hours was hardly likely. However once that was sorted, the service was polite and attentive.
There were some restrictions on which dishes we could order because we were using a coupon, but there was still an enormous range to choose from, and we were told clearly which ones we could choose from. I don't have a problem with there being restrictions when we are getting a meal at 50% off or better, but I do appreciate being told very clearly what they are so there is no confusion or embarrassment.
My first impression of the small metal bowls that the curries were served in were that they would be woefully inadequate, but they packed a punch and I was proven wrong. Tasty creamy sauces and plenty of meat meant that we could not finish them and no one went hungry. The rice servings proved adequate and the garlic and butter naans were fresh and flaky.
The room has just been refurbished and is a pleasant room of aubergine walls and some pretty fancy overhead lights. Decorations are kept to a minimum and the table and chairs are simple, but there is a nice outdoor dining area, albeit next to the Boulevard pub and overlooking the forecourt of the Floreat Forum shops. Being located at the shops however, means that there is plenty of undercover parking and there is also a small playground just outside the restaurant which could be useful for families.
Saffron is now fully licenced and offers lunch options and takeaway. All their food is halal and there are also many gluten-free options.
