Let me begin by saying that the sense of safety is relative. I have friends in an area I consider very dangerous (where I got mugged by a group of teenagers) and they do not share the uneasiness I felt every time I step out of the house back when I lived there. On the other hand, crime happens even in the most peaceful suburbs.

Based on the report of the Bureau of Crime Statistics in New South Wales, violent and property offences has been on the decline at the state level as of 2013. This report categorised crimes as violent crimes and property crimes. Violent crimes are those directed against a person, such as assault. Property crimes are those directed against property, such as theft. While not everyone will agree, this list will consider only the statistical data for violent crimes. That is, safety will be defined as the least likely chance of getting physically hurt.

For 2013, the safest suburbs in New South Wales are:

First, Hunters Hill is tied with Ku-ring-gai.

Second, Canada Bay is tied with Greater Hume Shire, Hornsby, Lane Cove, and Mosman.

Third, Kiama is tied with Palerang, Pittwater, Ryde, The Hills Shire, and Willoughby.

On the other end of the spectrum, it may be wise to avoid the following suburbs:

First, Bourke. Crime in Bourke can break the charts, so to speak. Its crime density is more than seven-fold the NSW state average.

Second, Walgett. Police in Walgett must be just as busy. Its crime density is about 5 times the NSW state average.

Third, Moree Plains. Crime in Moree Plains almost equals inner city crime rate. It has a crime density that is thrice the state average.

Again, crime can happen anywhere. Each of us need to be aware of the surroundings, and it would always be fair to err in the side of caution.
