One of the world's great equestrian spectacles, the Melbourne International 3-Day Event , will be staged over this weeks Queen's Birthday Long Weekend, Friday 8th to Monday 11th June at the Werribee Park National Equestrian Centre.

The oldest event of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and the second oldest in the world, the event then known as the Melbourne International Horse Trials were first held in 1957. The three days of competition showcases three very different riding disciplines, dressage, cross-country and show jumping.

The Dressage competition will be held on Friday & Saturday and is a demonstration of precision riding and harmony with the horse and rider executing set movements within a rectangular arena. Dressage is sometimes referred to as equine ballet.

Saturday's Cross-country is a gest of the courage and fitness of both horse and rider as they gallop around a course clearing fences and an array of often daunting natural and man-made obstacles whilst attempting to set the fastest time for the course.

Monday's third and final discipline of Show Jumping is a timed event where horse and rider attempt to clear a set of fences in an enclosed arena in the fastest time and without incurring penalties for fences down or lost time.

The Melbourne 3-Day Event brings together the very best horses and riders in a test of courage, fitness and agility in the grounds of one of Victoria's great old homes.
