Tacos & Cocktails
There is a growing number of Mexican restaurants in Brisbane, many of which are going beyond the fast food burrito restaurants or the pub tacos. Sabrosso in Paddington has already proved popular with a wide crowd, from young families through to older foodies and anyone looking for interesting food and cocktails.

A note about Mexican food

Mexican food is a broad category of food which usually applies mostly to Mexican inspired food. In fact, there are a number of food traditions and styles here. Tex-Mex is a culinary style that started in Texas and New Mexico as a result of these areas, which were formerly part of Mexico becoming part of the United States and combining Mexican and US food traditions. Cal-Mex is the Californian version of this. These traditions include nachos, hard tacos and burritos. One giveaway is the use of yellow cheese.

Sabrosso manages to sample a bit from all of these food traditions, trying to bring authentic styles to Brisbane as well as providing things people are familiar with. They have plans to bring in more authentic Mexican food to the menu in the future and see if it becomes popular.

The Atmosphere

Sabrosso provides a laid back relaxed atmosphere with a lively undercurrent. Mariachi music plays on the sound system and there are colourful flags and decorations on the walls and tables.

While open to Latrobe Terrace with stools looking out onto the road, it is still quiet as there is little traffic on the road as this end of the terrace. It is also a dog-friendly restaurant, so feel free to bring your four-legged friend.

The Menu

If you are looking for a light entree, then the Dips (Entrada) or the Mexican style Tapas (comida de la calle) is the way to go. Though the recommended entree is the tacos. You can get 3 for $16 and while small. they are fairly substantial. So one taco per person makes a great entree, though 3 will be a nice meal for one person. Of the 3 we tried, the hickory smoked chicken was definitely the standout and I think when I go back the one I would try would be beef.

At this stage, I should note that the food is not particularly spicy but there are sauce bottles on the table. They also have some ultra spicy freshly made chilli sauce if you ask for it. I definitely have some friends who would want that.

For a main the best choices are the enchiladas, quesadillas or chimichangas. Fajitas are a classic Tex-Mex dish of grilled meat served on a taco. We chose the beef quesadillas, which are a grilled taco with filling and cheese. This is really delicious and quesadillas are one the best for vegetarians options (with tofu, not beef).

The tostada el grande is indeed big. It is a deep fried taco bowl filled with meat and salad. You can break off bits of the bowl to use as dipping chips to eat with what this bowl.

They have a few Mexican desserts, including churros, a long straight doughnut served with cream and chocolate or fudge sauce, and chocolate nachos which is less traditional. You can also have ice cream sundaes, brownies and you can also order gelato from the attached gelato bar.

Drinks and Cocktails
Sabrosso has a wide selection of drinks, especially cocktails. Obviously, the drinks to have in a Mexican restaurant are Margaritas and you have a choice of traditional, strawberry, pineapple jalapenos or a Sabrosso special margarita. Other cocktails worth checking out are the Mexican iced tea and the ginger mojito.

Beers include imported Mexican beers such as Dos Equis, Corona, Sol, Pacifico, TECATE and Negra Modelo. They also have imported beers from other countries as well as a selection of Australian craft beers.

For non-alcoholic drinks, they have juice or drinks that are popular with kids such as milkshakes and spiders. You can also order the cocktails without alcohol if you prefer.

The Verdict

This is a great restaurant in the quieter area of Paddington and the regular crowd demonstrates the wider appeal of this place attracting families, couples, groups of young people among others. With a nice selection of Mexican and Tex-Mex food, cocktails and other drinks, served in a relaxed and vibrant atmosphere, it is worth checking out.
