I paid my very first visit to the
, in Victor Harbor, last week and wondered why I had never visited before. It's a wonderful old building full of character as well as interactive displays, whale bones and relics, historical information and real live marine creatures (although not whales).
You'll find the on Railway Terrace, next to Warland Reserve. Once you spot the whale tail water feature, you'll know you are getting close.
On the ground floor you'll see copious written information, murals and models.
Downstairs you'll find a Steve Irwin ship replica, large whale bones, a play area for the littlies with sea-themed books and puzzles and a sandpit full of fossils.
There's a 3D Theatre and, if you are so inclined, you can
crawl through the belly of a 'Giant Squid'. Really, there's something for everybody here.
Upstairs there's a well equipped learning centre set up for school groups and school holiday activities. I sat in on an inspiring session about jellyfish, where, along with the kids I learned about jellyfish characteristics and life cycles. I then watched the delighted faces of the children as they constructed a 'Jellyfish in a Bottle' and a colourful 'Jellyfish Suncatcher'.
also provides information on whale sightings and locations so that you can try to spot the real thing. Read this
article before you go. Excitement is mounting as whale season approaches. In fact one humpback whale has already been sighted further west at Point Lowly Lighthouse.
To help celebrate the season, the Whale Centre will present the
Whale Time Playtime Festival on Sunday 29 May, 2016 from 10.00am until 4.30pm at Warland Reserve. Tickets will be $5 per person and you can purchase them at the gate or
online.
There will be live entertainment by SeaStar Rockers, Amazing Drumming Monkeys, Noises for Kids Humphrey B Bear and more. Other activities will include Kondoli the inflatable whale, face painting, bubble fun, amusement rides and entry to the .
