The SAHMRI Foyer in Adelaide
After having travelled to many other countries of the world I am still proud to call South Australia my home, and I share this feeling with many other people in Adelaide and the country regions of South Australia. I'm not alone in cringing when I hear the intensely irritating whine that "Adelaide is boring" - there's even a
fun weekly podcast that lampoons the moaners.

A Disused Railway Station Near the Coonawarra Wineries
For this reason I was quite excited to hear about the SA Today Photo Competition - a free competition that asks you to take a photo that captures the spirit of South Australia. It's open to people of all ages and skill levels, but your photo must be taken on May 18 between 12.01am and 11.59pm. The photo must be taken somewhere in South Australia with a camera (but not a phone camera), and you may only submit one entry.

A Scenic River Torrens Cruise on Popeye
The best ten entries will be displayed in an exhibition at the Adelaide Convention Centre during the 2014 SALA festival, and the overall winner of the competition will be decided by a People's Choice vote during the exhibition. The winner will receive a copy of their image printed on acrylic (worth around $600), and one randomly selected voter will also receive a copy of their favourite image.
Submitted artwork will be on sale during the exhibition and all proceeds will go to Barkuma, a non profit charitable organisation which helps people with disabilities to live in the community. After being formed nearly 50 years ago, Barkuma now has more than 140 staff helping over 1000 disabled people around South Australia.

Faraway House in Adelaide, South Australia
This is a fantastic opportunity to be creative and be recognised as a photographer at the SALA festival, while showcasing a unique image that you have taken in Adelaide or one of the regions of South Australia. With such freedom of choice in choosing your subject, your imagination will be the limit. From mills to mosquitoes, forts to football, SAHMRI building to sailing, the choice of subject is all yours.
The SA Today Photo Competition is being run by South Australia's Ochre Digital, a company specialising in signage and large format printing. To see more information about the photo competition head over to

Good luck in this free competition!
