Whether you're in training for an obstacle event such as Tough Mudder or True Grit, want to break away from boring gyms to get fit or just have an afternoon of great fun and physical activity, then SA Base Camp is for you. Unique in South Australia, this is the most fun you'll ever have working out.

With the music pumping loud, feel the adrenaline rushing through your veins as you tackle 18 different obstacles designed to give every muscle in your body a complete workout. Where else can you experience sprinting against 80 km winds, launching yourself up a gladiator-style travelator in an up hill sprint, clawing your way through a barbed wire battle zone or scaling a giant hay pyramid to reach the top?

If that's not enough then a large area of olympic-class free weights and gym equipment is there to give you that extra burn. It's also recommended as a great way to warm up before pitting yourself against the course. The weight sets go up higher than most gyms for those wanting to push themselves even further.

SA's first indoor obstacle course and training centre is open to all fitness levels from beginners right through to adrenaline junkies. The course is intense and was deliberately designed to be a real challenge, even for crossfit trainers, body builders and parkour enthusiasts. Don't expect this to be a breeze on your first try, but don't let this stop you either; most obstacles provide two levels of difficulty so you can work up to the challenge.

Still building up the stamina to overcome an obstacle but not there yet? Optional suggested floor exercises are there to provide you with the extra training you need to get to make it to the top.

Traction Control is Australia's first and only fitness travelator capable of travelling over 15 kilometres per hour at a 38° inclination. This obstacle has two speed settings and a static section in the middle enabling beginners to build up their speed, strength and technique.

To help you stay fit and keep motivated SA Base Camp offers a child minding service for children up to 12 years of age. In fact, it's one of the only training facilities in the State to offer this service. Sessions are available Monday to Friday in the mornings (9.00am to 12.00pm) and afternoons (4.00pm to 6.00pm extended to 6.30pm on Mondays) for the cost of only a gold coin donation. This is particularly great for young mums looking to get back into shape after their pregnancy, since children as young as 8 weeks can be looked after. Staff are experienced and friendly and provide the highest quality of care so that you can enjoy a great work out knowing they will be well looked after.

Fuel Cafe is open to both participants and the general public. With amazingly affordable prices, enjoy a healthy breakfast or lunch or even just a great coffee or a rewarding cold drink after your workout. Gatorade on ice is available from just $1 - now that's cool. Take a break and recover with friends and family in comfort with both outdoor and indoor seating available. Meal options are healthy and filling, perfect for those wanting to recharge after a workout but not waste their efforts by consuming too many calories. The salmon and scrambled eggs is proving to be the most popular item on the menu so far and as for the coffee - this should be your morning stop on the way to work - whether you're working out or not.

SA Base Camp is the creation of Luke and Nicole who recognised that SA was sorely lacking in a facility dedicated to sports specific training. The process of developing the initial concept through to opening the doors took 18 months, involving dedication, resourcefulness and a few personal sacrifices along the way. All of the obstacles were custom designed and built by a local SA engineering firm over a period of four months.

So how much does it cost?

Pricing is on par with other casual gym memberships at $18 per session, with session times only limited by your stamina. Get addicted to the adrenaline rush and you're sure to be impressed by the membership savings to be had. For example, join for three months and the cost is $20 per week. Opt for the six month package and this comes down to $19 per week, with greater savings to be had on the full year membership. A 10% discount applies on all prices for Service Personnel.

SA Base Camp is open for group sessions of up to 10 people and discounted rates apply. A dedicated personal trainer will even assist as your group tackles the course, guiding you through the best techniques for each obstacle. This is a great option for any beginners feeling a little intimidated to break through this mental barrier and reach new heights.

Corporate and team building groups are very welcome. Bookings of 20 or more people will entitle you to a closed doors session. Priced at $25 per head and including food and drinks this is incredible value. But it's not just the corporates who can take advantage of this deal - why not impress your friends for a birthday or even a bucks night group, get out there and have some real fun.

Some tips for beginners.

Wear gloves - Not only will they give you slightly better grip but they'll protect your hands from callouses. If you forget to bring a pair, gloves are available for sale from Fuel Cafe.

Go with friends - We went in a group and found this to be a great way to try it out for the first time. Having little experience on an obstacle course, it was good to have the encouragement from friends to push yourself a little harder as well as getting tips on technique from a personal trainer to ensure you don't strain or hurt anything. The best part was having an absolute ball running through the obstacles, it was like being on an adult's playground and having the best workout we have had in a long time. You can guarantee you'll be sore all over the next day, and that's how you know you have succeeded. We gave every obstacle a go and there was no failing; just trying and getting better each time.

Leave your ego at the door - Give everything a go! The course is meant to be a challenge, so you won't blitz across each obstacle on your first go. Work up to each challenge and feel proud of every improvement you make along the way. Take time to learn the proper technique.

Now the only obstacle left in your way is you, so get off the couch, get away from the computer and find out just what you're capable of at SA Base Camp.

We give SA Base Camp 5/5 Wanders for an innovative new way to exercise that's fun, affordable and accessible for everyone. We'll be back here in no time, and we hope you will too.

Where 1 Wander isn't worth getting off the couch for and 5 Wanders should leave a trail of dust in your wake: it's that good.
